Residents, voluntary and community groups, businesses and representatives from across the public sector in Sutton met up to discuss the future of The Sutton Plan on 7 February. The event started with a review of what has been achieved over the past year or so through our partnership work in Sutton.

Sutton Plan


Mary Morrissey, interim Chief Executive for Sutton Council, talked about the Domestic Abuse Transformation Board, Anna Cassin explained how the Sutton Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Network was established and Alison Navarro outlined the findings of the Fairness Commission.

Following this we looked at some of the challenges facing the borough and where we might want to focus our attention next. Speakers looked at three questions identified through engagement and evidence from the past 18 months:

  • How do we ensure children in Sutton get the best start in life?
  • How can we help Sutton’s young people to be happy and healthy?
  • How can Sutton be a place where all adults can live healthy lives?

Imran Choudhury, Director of Public Health outlined some of the issues regarding school readiness in Sutton and challenged the partnership to come together to do better. Jonathan Williams, Assistant Director for Children’s Social Care and Safeguarding, proposed some principle for partners to work through together.

Finally, Michelle Blagrove from Age UK Sutton outlined some of the effects of loneliness and talked about some of the intergenerational work that Age UK have planned to bring older and younger people together to learn how to cook. All of these speakers inspired some really positive and creative conversations in the following group work and some clear themes outlined below began to emerge for future work:

  • Intergenerational connectivity: a need to be more ambitious about what this could look like
  • Co-production: how do we embed this across Sutton and share learning across partnerships? This is about listening to the voices of those we are supporting & truly understanding our residents
  • The role and power of communities: how do we build the conditions for stronger communities?
  • Early Intervention at all points of a person’s life: children, young adults, and adults – what would an effective model of support look like that enables everyone to thrive?
  • Look beyond traditional services: let’s make the most of the borough’s rich assets (from residents to parks

A few people mentioned that there is a need to review the partnership list and to consider methods to sharing this and so we will be looking at how to take this forward in due course.
